Murrieta Valley High School Football Coach Steps Down

Coach Greg Ireland cited health reasons in his decision to step down as the head football coach of Murrieta Valley High School.

Greg Ireland is stepping down as the head varsity football coach at Murrieta Valley High School, it was announced Tuesday.

Ireland cited health reasons in his decision to give up the position he has held since 2008, according to a news release.

"This is by far the most difficult decision I have ever made," Ireland said. "While I will dearly miss coaching the game, I have come to the conclusion this is best for all. The program is strong. We have great student athletes, strong coaches, and it is a good time to pass the baton."

Ireland has been involved with the Murrieta Valley football program for 17 years. Prior to serving as head coach, he was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator.

Over the five years Ireland has been at the helm, the Nighthawks consistently made it to CIF playoffs.

Murrieta Valley Athletic Director Darin Mott lauded Ireland's successful run with the program and said he will be missed.

"Coach Ireland’s value to our program is immeasurable, it can’t be measured by wins and losses," Mott said. "His value to our school and program are measured by the countless lives he has impacted. He truly embodies all of the characteristics any school would want in a head coach. He has instilled in our players his motto of trust, commitment, love and belief and our players have demonstrated that both on and off the field. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have worked with him. He is everything we look for in a Nighthawk coach and much more. I will miss seeing him on the sidelines on Friday nights."

Ireland will remain a Nighthawk, though, as he will continue coaching the golf team.

The head football coaching position will be advertised, according to Mott. The hope is to "attract a number of qualified candidates," he said.
