Murrieta Police, Fire Remember 9/11 With Annual Run

Murrieta police and fire personnel met early Tuesday morning to embark on their annual 9/11 anniversary run through city streets.

Murrieta police and firefighters carried on a tradition Tuesday of honoring the victims of 9/11.

The Murrieta police and fire 9/11 anniversary run originated when Murrieta police Sgt. Daryl Underwood started a 10-mile run of his own shortly after Sept. 11, 2001.

After a couple years of running alone, however, he decided to shorten the distance and invited all Murrieta police and fire personnel to take part.

"Each year, regardless of the day of the week, police officers and firefighters gather in front of the Murrieta Police Department and run five miles from the station to Calle De Oso Oro and back," Murrieta police Officer Kent Chivington said, in an email to Patch Tuesday.

Participants meet at Town Square Park near the Veterans' Memorial before embarking on the run and time of reflection.

"No one gets left behind and each participant takes a turn holding the American flag or the 9/11 flag," Chivington said.
