The campus underwent renovations in 2002 and kept its historic bell tower as part of the design. The bell was first rung on Oct. 28, 1885, and had two homes before being relocated to Murrieta Elementary in 1958. Extended daycare is offered on-site for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Students from Murrieta Elementary later attend Thompson Middle School and Murrieta Valley High School.

Feeder schools are Lisa J. Mails and Monte Vista elementary schools. McElhinney students feed into Vista Murrieta High School.</p>
