Occupy Temecula Holds Food Drive

Canned food items and other commodities were collected Saturday at the first food drive organized by Occupy Temecula during its protest at the Duck Pond.

Occupy Temecula organizers and supporters held its first food drive Saturday to help families in need.

All food, clothing and toiletry items that were donated by the community will go toward helping those who count on the Temecula-Murrieta Rescue Mission for assistance.

Today’s food drive took place during the group's Occupy Temecula protest at the Temecula Duck Pond on Rancho California and Ynez roads.

The group collected items that were listed on the mission Website's ‘needs list,’ such as canned food, clothing and toiletries, said Violet Mabe, an Occupy Temecula Organizer.

“A big part of the occupy movement is to help the community.

“We got great support from the community, and we want to support the community,” Mabe said.

The Occupy Temecula supporters said they were glad to collect food for the community ... from the community.

“The food drive is a great idea ... it shows the community we’re here to help one another,” said Arlin Taylor, Occupy Temecula supporter. “We are all here for one basic reason; That’s to bring change to Temecula and the country.”

One supporter said he finds it hard to understand why there are so many hungry people in the United States.

“The food drive should not be but it is,” said an Occupy Temecula supporter who declined to give his full name. “The reason I say it should not be is because this country produces more food than any other country in the world ... yet we have more people hungry.

"Why that is, I don’t know,” the supporter said.

Anyone who wishes to donate food, clothing and other supplies may drop them off at 31300 Rancho Community Way, off Temecula Parkway.
