Murrieta Library to Hold Training for Student Volunteers

Students volunteers 12 to 18 years old are sought to help with the Library's Summer Reading Program. Those interested must attend one of two upcoming training sessions.

The is accepting applications for students 12 to 18 years old who wish to volunteer for the Library's upcoming Summer Reading Program.

Students who want to be productive, have fun and learn valuable job skills  while earning community service credits were welcome to apply, according to a Library news release.

In order to participate, students are required to attend one of two training sessions scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 19 and at 6:30 p.m. May 22 in the Library’s Community Room.

“This is a perfect opportunity for teens to learn good job skills and habits," said Youth Services Librarian Allison Eagans. “Only those teens who are willing to interact with and provide a great service to the participating children should apply as a volunteer. The Library will require a 10-hour minimum commitment from each volunteer this summer.”

The purpose of the Library’s Summer Reading Program is to motivate children and teens to maintain their reading habits or improve their reading skills throughout the summer and to have fun while they are reading, according to the news release.

The student volunteers will assist Library staff with such tasks as setting up activities, monitoring reading logs and handing out incentives to the reading program participants.

Details regarding hours needed, preferred skills and other requirements will be shared at the mandatory training sessions. Parents are encouraged to attend the training session with the teen. Each training session space is limited to the first 30 applicants.
