Vista Murrieta Playoff Streak Ends At Home With Loss To Long Beach Wilson

The second-round playoff game ended in a 6-4 loss for the Broncos, who were shooting for a second consecutive division title.

Vista Murrieta’s run in the CIF Division 1 playoffs ended as the visiting Long Beach Wilson Bruins outlasted the Broncos and escaped with a 6-4 victory Tuesday afternoon at Vista Murrieta High School.

Soloman Williams’ two-run triple in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Wilson scored three runs to escape with the victory. He was then at the receiving end of a key double play in the bottom of the seventh which sealed the victory for the Bruins.

“Give them credit,” Vista Murrieta head coach Kurt Ruth said. “They never stopped fighting when they struggled, and we never stopped fighting when we struggled. There were two really good teams out there. They were just better today."

Wilson starter Bobby Webb pitched four innings, giving up two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts, but got a no-decision in the game.

Wilson went on to strike first, scoring two runs against Vista Murrieta starter Joven Afenir.

After Brett Harper struck out, Webb would single and score on William’s double. Williams later scored on Timmy Richard’s single. Stefan Miladinovich was thrown out at the plate to minimize the damage as Wilson took the 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Afenir settled in, keeping the Bruins scoreless before giving way to Tyler Russell in the fourth inning. He gave up two unearned runs on three hits a walk, a strikeout and a hits batsman.

Vista Murrieta responded in its half of the first as Jeff Moberg went on to single and then later score on Joe Ortuno’s double. Vista Murrieta scored once more in the fourth and twice more in the fifth highlighted by a squeeze play scoring Ortuno.

Trailing 4-3 at the top of the seventh, Wilson began its comeback. Harper pulled a single, and would then be forced at second base while Webb reached first. Daniel DeWolf then drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Williams hit a line drive down the line, scoring both runners as he reached third safely. He then scored on Miladinovich’s sacrifice fly to put the game out of reach.

Chase Dejong entered in the sixth inning and pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory, his second in as many games.

Despite the loss, Ruth said his team had a great season overall.

“Obviously you would like to do better in the post season. People judge you on how you do in the post season,” he said. “But if you looked at the overall body of work as we won 22 games this year and winning the league championship, I believe we had a great season.”

Ruth said he should return a good core of players next year and “continue to do what we do.”

The Broncos finished 22-6.
