Vista Murrieta Hosts Corona Centennial in CIF Football Division Rematch

The Broncos prepare to battle the Huskies for the CIF-SS Inland Division crown.

The Huskies are coming back into town Friday night to find out who is the top dog in the division once again.

This will be third consecutive meeting in the CIF Southern Section Inland Division championship game for the two football powerhouses. Centennial took the Championship in 2010 with a dominant 45-21 victory at home; Vista Murrieta came back tougher in 2011

The division is considered one of the toughest in California, with Vista Murrieta ranked No. 2 in the state and fifth in the nation by Maxpreps.com. Centennial comes into the game fifth in the state and 24th coast to coast, according to Maxpreps.com.

The scene is set to see which team will move on to become Southern California’s newest football dynasty.

Coach Coley Candaele’s Broncos will be tested Friday. The Huskies are averaging 574.4 yards and 52.6 points per game. They move the chains equally well in the air and on the ground.

They have had five games of more than 60 points. In two of those games they gained more than 700 yards—just ask the Murrieta Valley Nighthawks.

Centennial Coach Matt Logan noted the key to the Centennial's success is discipline; the way they set the tempo and control the pace of the game. Their hurry up, no huddle offense disrupts defenses and places added physical and mental demands on the players.

Centennial is led by junior quarterback Robert Webber who has thrown for 3,091 yards and 33 touchdowns. His key targets are Chase Krivashei, D'Vonte McKneely, Barry Ware and Ryan Pascarella, who combined for 178 catches and 27 of Webber’s TD tosses.

On the ground, Austin Renken and Tre Watson are the workhorses for Centennial. Renken has run for 1,062 yards and 16 TDs while Watson leads Corona with 1,286 yards rushed and 20 TDs.

This is all of courtesy of one of the best offensive lines in Southern California led by senior Cameron Hunt.

The Huskie defense is big, quick and unrelenting. They have held opponents to 28 points per game this season. Centennial’s defensive leaders are Xavier Hughes, Brandon Garcia and Garrett Hughes. The Huskies are tough; they are coming off a convincing 46-36 victory over Upland.

In their semifinal playoff last week, Candaele’s Broncos finally took control in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 34-0 victory over Rancho Cucamonga.

Led by quarterback Nick Stevens, Vista Murrieta has a potent, explosive offense once it gets started. And they will need to start early against Centennial.

Stevens has a well of talented receivers to throw to: Darrel Denby, Colin Baker and Jamie Nunley, who can catch the ball in the clutch. Senior Su’a Cravens is one of the Broncos' most dangerous weapons.

Stevens and junior Kishawn Holmes have been the moving the chains on the ground all season. Bezhawn Hill and Keiron Long balance out the running game for the Broncos.

The running game’s success has been due to an offensive line that has developed into one of the division’s best. Matthew Tyre, Donnell Toliver, Mark Diano, James Maloney and Jack Porter make up the Bronco offensive line.

The Broncos shut out their third opponent in a five-game span last week. Vista Murrieta’s defense has established itself as the best in the division. They humbled the mighty Rancho Cucamonga offense.

The core of the Broncos' punishing, aggressive defensive unit are defensive ends Tyler Cook, Curtis Bolton and tackle Grant Cleary.

Middle linebacker Bryce Smith anchors the opportunistic, swarming defense. Defensive linemen Ray Faoliu, Ricardo Mermea and John Hall solidify the group. Cravens has been a standout on both sides of the ball.

Come out to Bronco Stadium and witness Friday's epic battle between these two football giants in the CIF Southern Section Ford Championships Presented by Farmers, football division final. Game time is at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports West.
