Murrieta HS Gridiron Summary For Week Ending Nov. 9

Murrieta high schools put forward one last push towards CIF playoff invitations with a mixed 2-2 result on the varsity football field last week.

The Vista Murrieta Broncos are the lone representative for the city in the playoffs by virtue of their stellar performance all season, including a 41-5 win on the road at Chaparral Friday night.

Vista Murrieta Bronco highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Coltin Gerhart kept things on the ground this week--for the most part--rushing for 128 yards on twenty carries.
  • Junior Seth Acda had four carries for 68 yards and one touchdown.
  • Junior Tito Feliciano rushed 14 times for 54 yards and a touchdown.
  • The player of the game honors could easily have gone to the Bronco player wearing No. 15, Kwesi Mashack.  He had two pick-sixes—both from 55 yards out.  The first interception came early in the second quarter and the second was late in the game.
  • Junior Brandon Worthy had one interception for 40-yards and a touchdown.
  • Aaron Ruth was 5 of 5 for PATs bringing his season total to 65 of 66.
  • Ruth also booted two field goals—a 40-yarder just before halftime and a 36-yarder early in the fourth quarter.

Defensive statistics for the Broncos were not available at the time of publication at maxpreps.com.

Season’s strengths:

  • Coltin Gerhart is 71 of 118 attempts for 1163 yards, 13 passing TDs and four interceptions; on the ground, Gerhart is averaging just under 12 yards a carry for 1208 yards and 23 TDs
  • Tito Feliciano is a consistent machine, grounding out over nine yards a carry for 786 yards and nine TDs
  • Colin Baker is the Bronco’s leading receiver with 440 yards on 24 receptions with 5 TDs
  • Randy Beggs is the team’s leading tackler with 83, 41 solo
  • Forty-six Broncos have a minimum of one tackle on this deep team
  • Curtis Bolton leads in the sacks category with six thus far
  • Seven Broncos have had one or more quarterback picks; several going for TDs

Record:  5-0 League (9-1 Overall)

Next up:  Coacy Coley Candaele’s Broncos are the number-one seed in the highly-competitive Inland Division.  They host Los Osos this Friday in the first round of CIF-Southern Section playoffs.  The Grizzlies, from Rancho Cucamonga, finished fourth in the Baseline League and sport a 5-5 overall season record (2-3 in league).

From this point, four wins in a row will get you a CIF championship.  Good luck, Broncos!

Murrieta Valley Nighthawk highlights:

  • Junior QB Max Maitland was 6 of 12 for 47 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
  • Sophomore Dominic Morace caught one ball for a 13-yard TD.
  • Sophomore Quincy Wimbish had a career-high night carrying the ball 28 times for 225 yards and three touchdowns; his longest play was for 42 yards.  With his 18 yards in pass receptions, Wimbish tallied 243 total yards.
  • Senior Michael Robles returned from an injury and pounded out 108 yards on 18 carries with two TDs.
  • Senior Jordan Silva scored one touchdown via the rush.
  • Two defenders stood out with their tackling totals:  junior Mickey Sarner garnered ten (six solo) and sophomore Campbell Sawyer had nine (six solo). 
  • Nighthawk sack distribution:  Silva – 1; senior Julian Sanchez – 1; Sawyer – 0.5; senior Anthony Cabral 0.5.
  • MV enjoyed four interceptions on the two Bear quarterbacks: senior Lafayette Water – 2 for 53 yards; junior Mickey Sarner – 1 for 43 yards; senior Weston Brown – 1 for 34 yards.
  • Senior PAT specialist Loni Byers finished her high school career with 6 of 7 on the night and a very respectable 35 of 38 on the year.

Record:  2-3 League (6-4 Overall)

MV does not move on as they got the short straw, just missing a playoff birth.  The Los Osos Grizzlies are the sole at-large team in the division, edging out coach Vinny Fazio’s Nighthawks for that final spot in his inaugural season.

Murrieta Mesa Ram highlights:

  • Sophomore quarterback Peyton Uhl completed 12 of 25 passes for 128 yards, one touchdown and one interception; his longest completion was for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Uhl also ran the ball ten times for 63 yards and a score.
  • Sophomore Austen Salcedo had two pass receptions for 50 yards including the 43-yard TD toss from Uhl.
  • Sophomore McKinley Ross had 14 carries for 76 yards.
  • Junior Bryson Bridges had 13 tackles for the game, four solo.
  • Senior Chandler Woodward had 11 tackles (four solo).
  • Senior Cire Moll had ten tackles (four solo).
  • Woodward and Moll recorded sacks, 1.5 and 0.5, respectively.
  • Senior Nick Tejada recovered one fumble.
  • Sophomore kicker Mateo Thompson was 3 for 3 on PATs, finishing the season with 24 of 26.

Record:  0-5 League (5-5 Overall)

Coach Justin Schaeffer’s Rams are now done with the 2013 season and look forward to great things next year.

Calvary Murrieta Warriors highlights:

  • Senior QB Kyle McClelland threw one touchdown pass and one interception to go with his 7 of 12 completions and 83 yards.
  • Freshman Adam Schwab had four receptions for 41 yards, his longest being 27 yards.
  • Senior Mike Zamora had two receptions for 31 yards and one touchdown.
  • Junior Christian Redin had a season-high 168 yards on the ground from 12 carries.  He scored twice.
  • Freshman Noah Korinek lead Warrior defenders with 11 tackles (8 solo).
  • Senior Connor Quirk had one quarterback sack.
  • Senior Eric Voss kept his punting average up for the season with 44.33 on the night.  He finishes the season with a 41.16 average.  Voss was 3 for 3 in PATs and 2 of 2 in the field goal department—his longest being 42 yards.
  • Freshman Micah Roth ran back eight kickoffs, averaging nearly 17 yards per return; his longest was 42 yards.
  • Senior teammate Matt Bofill ran one kickoff back for 47 yards.

Record:  0-5 League (2-8 Overall)
