Murrieta HS Gridiron Summary For Week Ending Nov. 2

Murrieta high schools struggled at 1-3 on the varsity football field last week.

Vista Murrieta Bronco highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Coltin Gerhart rushed for 105 yards on eleven carries with three touchdowns.  He was 12 of 18 for 157 yards, one TD and one interception  in passing against the Rams.
  • Eight players tallied receptions with senior Darryl Denby leading the way with three for 51 yards.
  • Sophomore Keith Ford caught one pass for a 16-yard touchdown and had another on the ground.
  • Denby also returned two punts for 45 yards.
  • Senior Kwesi Mashack returned one kickoff for 25 yards.
  • Randy Beggs scored one safety
  • Aaron Ruth was 5 for 5 for PATs bringing his season total to 60 of 61.

Defensive tackles, sacks and interception statistics for the Broncos were not available at the time of publication at maxpreps.com.

Record:  4-0 League (8-1 Overall)

Next up:  A league-championship showdown at Chaparral (4-0 league; 7-2 overall) this Friday.  The Broncos haven’t lost a league football game since Nov. 14, 2008 at Murrieta Valley (10-3).  Chaparral won the CIF championship against the Broncos the following year on Dec. 11, 2009, 13-7, after getting trounced by Vista Murrieta 32-13 during league play.

Murrieta Mesa Ram highlights:

  • Senior quarterback Daniel Castro rushed 24 times for 82 yards.
  • Sophomore McKinley Ross had 16 carries for 162 yards, an impressive 10.13 yards-per-carry against a great Bronco defense.  Ross scored the Rams’ two touchdowns.
  • Sophomore Austen Salcedo had 37 yards in kickoff returns.
  • Senior Chandler Woodward led the Rams in tackles with nine, three solo.
  • Senior Davian Neitz had eight tackles, four solo.
  • Sophomore Jorge Arellano had a part in seven tackles.
  • Three Ram senior defensemen penetrated the Bronco offensive line with one sack each on the quarterback.
  • Neitz pulled down one interception.
  • Sophomore kicker Mateo Thompson was 2 for 2 on PATs.

Record:  0-4 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  Coach Justin Schaeffer’s Rams travel to Great Oak (2-2 league; 5-4 overall) for their final league game this Friday.  Great Oak was victorious over Temecula Valley last Friday, 42-14.

The last time the Nighthawks were shut out was Sept. 1, 2006 at home versus Santiago (Corona), 35-0.

Murrieta Valley Nighthawk highlights:

  • Sophomore Quincy Wimbish carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards.
  • Junior Aaron Young had two pass receptions for 30 yards.
  • Junior Aaron Young had one kickoff return for 24 yards.

Several defenders had career nights for tackling:

  • Sophomore Campbell Sawyer had 15 tackles, nine solo.
  • Senior Jordan Silva had 14 tackles, nine solo.
  • Junior Tyler Landis and senior Weston Brown each recorded 13 tackles, 11 and nine solo, respectively.
  • Junior Mickey Sarner had 11 tackles, seven solo.
  • Senior Julian Sanchez had eight tackles, seven solo.

In the sack department, four players saw action:

  • Sawyer and Silva had one each.
  • Sanchez and Senior Justin Tucker shared a QB sack.

Record:  1-3 League (5-4 Overall)

Next up:  MV finishes league play with a trip to Temecula Valley (1-3 league; 3-6 overall).  The Bears will try their best to upset any hope the Nighthawks have of post-season play.

Calvary Murrieta Warriors highlights:

  • Senior QB Kyle McClelland threw one touchdown pass to freshman receiver Casey Johnson.
  • Johnson had three receptions for 31 yards, the longest one for 16 yards.
  • Junior Christian Redin rushed five times for 27 yards, the longest for 21 yards.
  • The defensive player of the game—perhaps for the entire valley—could well be sophomore Paul Brown who had a career-high 26 tackles.  Nineteen were solo.  Brown is now averaging 13 tackles per game.
  • Five other defenders had ten or more tackles including Roth (13, six solo), freshman Noah Korinek (12, eight), senior Connor Quirk (11, seven), freshman Adam Schwab (10, seven) and Redin (10, five).
  • Korinek had one fumble recovery.
  • Senior Eric Voss had a fine punting night averaging 45.7 yards on six punts.  He was also 1 of 1 on his PAT.
  • Freshman Micah Roth returned one kickoff 23 yards.

Record:  0-4 League (2-7 Overall)

Next up:  The Warriors will finish the season with an away game at the University of Redlands versus Arrowhead Christian.  The Eagles are 1-3 in league (6-3 overall) and will be hungry after losing a close battle last week at Western Christian, 41-38.
