Murrieta Area Athletes Look To Make Mark At CIF Track And Field Finals

A number of Murrieta high schools will be represented at the CIF track and field finals Friday and Saturday at Cerritos College.

Murrieta high school athletes will be making strong appearances this weekend at the CIF-Southern Section Finals, to be held at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

The journey began for most during this past Saturday's divisional meets. Four meets were held on May 14 with the top nine in each event advancing to CIF Finals.

has a pair of athletes that could make some noise. Senior Jovonte Slater won the long jump, took third in the 100 and seventh in the 200 at the Division I prelims last week.

Junior Bernard Quinn could also prove to be threat out of  the Broncos. He won the 400 at prelims and finished sixth in the 200. His 47.60 run last week at Trabuco Hills High School was the second-best time in the State this season.

senior Soloman Ijah should also contend for a spot in Masters. He won the triple jump and finished eighth in the long jump at prelims. His 48-00.25 mark in the triple jump last week is the seventh-best in the State.

Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., followed by running events at 1 p.m.

When all is over Saturday, the top nine among the four divisions will advance to the CIF Masters Meet on May 27. The top 12 in the 800 meter, 1600, 3200 and all field events will also advance to Masters. The CIF State Meet is set for June 3 and 4 at Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Ticket prices for the CIF Finals are as follows: $9 general admission; $5 students (with high school ID); $5 children.
