An Uncommon No Hitter For Murrieta Mesa’s JB Bishop

Despite giving up one run on walks and errors, Bishop threw the first no-hitter in the history of the school in American Legion competition.

What do Murrieta Mesa pitcher Jonathan Bishop and Angels pitcher Ervin Santana have in common?

Both threw a no-hitter this past week, despite the opposing team scoring a run.

It’s a rarity in baseball, but it happens. An error, a wild pitch, a base on balls – but it still goes down in the books as a no-hitter.

In fact, the no hitter thrown by Bishop is the first in Murrieta Mesa baseball history. He tossed it July 21 to advance the Mesa Rams to the Regionals of the American Legion State Playoffs. Mesa threw his no-hitter in the quarterfinals against Ontario Christian for a 2-1 victory.

Coach Matt Mosiello started Bishop against Ontario Christian and he sailed through the first four innings, keeping his pitch count low and getting ahead of batters. The Rams defense sparkled early.

Late in the game, a couple of walks combined with a couple infield errors gave the Knights a run.

With the no-hitter still intact, Bishop took the mound in the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead and finished the game. He threw a total of 85 pitches.

Offensively for the Rams, Armando Valencia led off the sixth inning with a single, advanced to third, then scored on a wild pitch to give the Rams the 2-1 lead.
