Warm Springs Educator Named Outstanding Math Teacher

Sosciety Louden, who teaches algebra readiness at Warm Springs Middle School in Murrieta, was recently name Outstanding Math Teacher of the Year by a two-county association.

Eighth-grade math teacher Sosciety Louden of recently received the 2011-2012 Outstanding Math Teacher Award from the Riverside San Bernardino Counties Mathematics Teachers’ Association.

“Ms. Louden exemplifies excellence in the teaching of mathematics and the development of students’ understanding of mathematics and their love for learning mathematics,” said RSBCMTA President Sandra Patino, as she presented the award to Louden during an April 26 school board meeting in Murrieta.

Louden teaches algebra readiness, and Patino explained the importance of her work.

“She is laying the foundation that is essential for students’ future success in all secondary mathematics course work," Patino said. "Her creativity and passion in the classroom and her positive relationship with her students and colleagues were illustrated by her application and by the recommendations we received.”

Louden uses a varied approach to teaching math that includes history, math projects and technology. When students aren’t in class, they can to go to Louden’s website and find Pencasts that allow them to hear, see and relive class with a digital version of her notes and presentations.

On her website students also have access to an online textbook and workbook, links to interactive math games and a catch-up math program.

Louden said: “My goal is to keep my students’ interest in mathematics, not only throughout the year but for the rest of their lives! Warm Springs sixth grader Marisa Avenetti praised Louden saying, “I love ending my day in Mrs. Louden’s class, she is the greatest math teacher I have ever had.”

Along with the Outstanding Math Teacher Award, Louden received a $100 check, and a one-year membership to RSBCMTA. RSBCMTA is a local affiliate of the California Mathematics Council and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
