Truancy Sweep Finds No Murrieta Students Out of School

On Thursday, April 25, Murrieta police checked local parks, shopping centers, bowling alleys and rural areas for truant students.

A recent truancy sweep of Murrieta Thursday yielded no students out of school, police reported.

Between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the Murrieta Police Department Juvenile Investigations Unit, along with administrators from the Murrieta Valley Unified School District, conducted the sweep.

Officials checked local parks, shopping centers, bowling alleys and rural areas for truant students, according to Murrieta police Sgt. Robert Anderson.

At the same time, school resource officers from the Temecula Police Department were conducting a truancy sweep in their city. Two alleged truant Temecula students were cited and taken to school, Anderson reported.

"We didn't find any of our kids loitering about," Anderson said. "They all were either inside or in school so that is a good thing."

More truancy details will occur during the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, he said.

"There really isn't (a problem) but it's part of our trying to keep the kids in school and focused on education," Anderson said. "So we are going to be doing that periodically."
