Students Honor National Day of Prayer

Students at Calvary Murrieta Christian Schools enjoy a guest speaker and fun activities in honor of the National Day of Prayer.

A reminder for family, friends and community members to join together and pray for the nation is what this national holiday means for the students of Calvary Murrieta Christian Schools.

Junior high and high school students gathered together today in honor of the National Day of Prayer. They enjoyed a special guest speaker and a fun booth set up by Christian radio station Air1. Students enjoyed the message given and were excited about the day.

“It’s our whole nation coming together and thinking about what God has done for us,” student Sidney Galbraith said. “We need to be praying more and be sincere in our prayers.”

Aurelio Barreto, Founder and CEO of the Christian clothing store C28, gave a message to students in their morning chapel. Barreto focused on the power of prayer and the importance of making it a daily activity, not just a once a year occurrence.

“We don’t want it to be just a one-day event,” Junior High Principal Cameron Stevens said. “Every day should be like this.”

Barreto encouraged students to pray for the nation, state, city and government leaders. A video was shown for students that emphasized how powerful prayer can be in tough times.

“I think it’s a great day that we can get together and pray for our country and specific needs for others also,” student Mackenzie Davies said.

For high school student Janese Blackburn, the day is also a reminder of freedom.

“The freedom we have to be able to pray is so great because in some countries we can’t even talk about God,” Janese said.

During the student’s lunch break, Air1 set up a booth in the lunch area where they played Christian music and offered fun games for students –including games from the TV show “Minute to Win It.” Fliers and stickers were available for all students and faculty.

“We want to inspire students to listen to Air1 because it is an alternative to secular music,” Air1 Promotions Manager, Jeanice Lee, said.

Air1 is a commercial-free radio station that is supported by its listeners. Their goal is to help listeners keep connected with God through Christian music and real people, according to an Air1 flier given to students.

“We hope to direct students to a church or non-profit organization that can help them,” Lee added.

The National Day of Prayer is a day when people are asked to come together and pray, specifically for their country. This holiday was enacted by the United States Congress in 1952. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.

“Whether it’s the president or the governor, it’s a good reminder that they are human too and we need to be praying for them,” worship leader Zach Bell said.

The National Day of Prayer serves most as a reminder for Calvary Murrieta students to be praying for their nation and those in leadership.

“All in all, we need to have the sense of spirit that prayer is vital,” Stevens said. “If it takes this day to make it real, then that’s what we need.”
