Spoken-Word Essay Earns First Place in Contest

The first-place winner of Luiseño Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution annual essay contest was River Springs Charter School student Robynne French.

The winners of the Luiseño Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution annual essay contest were recently announced.

The This year, students in fifth through eighth grades were required to write about the War of 1812.

"This topic is timely because 2012 is the Bi-centennial of that event," said Luiseño DAR spokesperson Bonnie Hayosh, in a news release.

The first-place winner was Robynne French, a sixth-grader at River Springs Charter School in Temecula. Joseph Nash, an eighth-grader at St. Stephen Lutheran School in Fallbrook, won second place.

Robynne wrote her essay in a narrative style as a man commenting on his friend’s experiences in fighting in the War of 1812. Her essay used both spoken word and written correspondence to tell the story.

Joseph wrote of Andrew Jackson’s involvement in the War of 1812, particularly in the Battle of New Orleans.

Both contest winners read their essays during the Luiseño Chapter's luncheon meeting in April. After the readings both students were awarded certificates, medals, other prizes and the warm appreciation of the Luiseño Chapter, Hayosh said.
