School District to Soon Run on Solar Power

Starting with the district office, Murrieta schools are making the switch to sun-run power.

A solar carport under construction in the parking lot of the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Support Center is the beginning of some quick work.

Next up is By the end of the summer, the district expects to have school campuses running on solar power, said Karen Parris, district spokesperson. The move is expected to save the district $1 million a year in energy costs.

The $11-million project was approved by the school board in September 2011. the district borrowed when state monies were frozen during the construction of Murrieta Mesa High School. The funds can only be used for capital improvement projects, Parris said.

In addition to providing solar energy for buildings, the carports will offer shade at the sites.
