Number of Days in Murrieta School Year Returning to Pre-Recession Level

The Murrieta Valley Unified School District calendar calls for 180 days of school in 2013-2014, up from 175 in 2012-2013.

The number of days Murrieta students spend in school will return to pre-recession levels come August.

The governing board of the Murrieta Valley Unified School District during a recent meeting approved the student calendar for the 2013-2014 school year.

The calendar includes five more student days than it did in 2012-2013, District Spokeswoman Karen Parris confirmed.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, Aug. 14. The last day of school will be Friday, June 13, 2014.

Not unlike other California school districts, MVUSD in recent years voted to cut days to accommodate teacher and staff furlough days taken as a result of dwindling state education funds.

The state began allowing districts to decrease the number of student days in 2009 as a way to help districts mitigate budget shortfalls.

As of a budget report filed in March, the Murrieta Valley Unified School District estimated it would finish the 2012-2013 fiscal year on June 30 with general fund revenue of $156 million, expenditures of $160 million, and an ending fund balance of $9.5 million.

A low point was suffered by the district when, between the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 fiscal years, general fund revenue went from $162 million to $147 million.
