Murrieta Valley Beat by Laguna Beach in Volleyball

Nighthawks fall in CIF Girls Volleyball Quarterfinal.

After two exciting come-from-behind CIF playoff victories against Irvine Northwood and Yucaipa High, Murrieta Valley came up short and was eliminated from the tournament  last night.

In the Quarterfinal match, Laguna Beach came into town and swept the Hawks 25-10, 25-10, 25-17 ending their playoff run.

Led by Laguna Beach freshman Alyse Wallace Ford, the Breakers played a physical, well-rounded game.

She ended up with 15 kills, including match point.

Marina Paul and Allison Palmer both played exceptionally well and contributed to the sweep.

The Murrieta Valley Nighthawks Dana Backlund, Courtney Doyle, Taylor Suchy and Megan Dempsey each played outstanding games in the loss.

Backlund had 22 assists and eight digs. She will be headed for the University of Florida to play next year.

Suchy will  be taking her talents to Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

"To get to quarterfinal, we are very proud," Murrieta Valley Coach Sue Lillie said. "Midway through the season, we had a lot of problems figuring out lineups and were plagued with injuries, and to make it this far is a big accomplishment. This team battled and was very resilient. They gave their heart and soul."
