Murrieta Firefighters Treat 8th Graders to Pancake Breakfast

Off-duty Murrieta firefighters cooked 750 pancakes Tuesday morning for promoting Thompson Middle School eighth-graders.

Some eighth-graders in Murrieta got a special treat from firefighters Tuesday.

Off-duty personnel with the Murrieta Firefighters Association cooked up and served some 750 pancakes for students who will be moving on to high school in the fall.

The tradition began several years ago when a PTA mom asked the firefighters if they would cook a pancake breakfast as part of eighth-grade promotion activities, according to Murrieta fire Chief Matt Shobert.

After cooking breakfast Tuesday at Thompson, the firefighters—on special request—headed over to to help with a barbecue and pool party for fifth-graders.

Shobert was also making the rounds Tuesday.

"I have been around the fire service and different departments for a long time time; I've never seen this level of community involvement," Shobert told Patch. "It speaks to the magnitude of the character of the firefighters, this mentoring our of next generation in a positive way."
