Murrieta Center to Bear Name of Former County Schools Superintendent

A dedication ceremony for the new David L. Long Regional Learning Center, 41350 Guava St. in Murrieta, will be held May 8.

The Riverside County Board of Education will hold a dedication ceremony for the new David L. Long Regional Learning Center, 41350 Guava St. in Murrieta, starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

The center will be named for Long, the former Riverside County Superintendent of Schools who became Secretary of Education under then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This is the sixth regional learning center built by the Riverside County Office of Education to provide services to local communities around the county, including the Milo P. Johnson Center for Learning in Banning, Arlington Regional Learning Center in Riverside, Val Verde Regional Learning Center in Perris, Betty G. Gibbel Regional Learning Center in San Jacinto, and the Moreno Valley Regional Learning Center.

The new Murrieta center will house more than 175 students enrolled in a variety of programs, including Community School, Independent Study, and the Come Back Kids dropout recovery program. It will also be a site for new Health, Audiology and Medical Therapy training courses offered through Regional Occupational (ROP) and Career Technical Education (CTE) programs.

The center is a 30,000-square-foot, $13.5 million project paid for entirely by state funding. Classes and programs are scheduled to begin in June 2013. RCOE began work on the new center last March.
