Big Daddy Update: Murrieta Mesa Plays for Third Spot

Murrieta's high school boys basketball teams are off to a great season.

Murrieta Mesa was scheduled to play Vista Del Lago Saturday for third place in the Big Daddy Basketball tournament at Perris Citrus Hill High School.

Coach Russell Ham’s Rams are loaded with seniors this year and expect be in right where they are now; in tournament finals all year long. Now that the school finally has seniors, Ham has 13 seniors, one junior and a sophomore on the varsity roster.

The Rams dropped yesterday’s contest with Perris 51-40.

“This is (our) first time in this tournament, which is known to have some pretty good teams in it,” Coach Ham remarked. “We do feel good about being in the semis. We’d like to be in the finals, like everyone else. I’m very pleased at our effort, it really kept us in the game.”

Shane Staton led Mesa’s scoring with 10 points.

Vista Murrieta rebounded from its 62-42 loss to Corona and defeated Citrus Hill 45-43. The Broncos' Anthony White had 16 points while Peter Manu added 10. Freshman point guard Austin Beech handled the ball exceptionally well under pressure and also scored eight points.

Vista Murrieta was set to play for fifth place Saturday against the winner of the Notre Dame-Riverside Poly game.

Murrieta Valley won its second straight game, stomping Riverside Ramona 61-23. The Nighthawks were led by Kevin Padlo’s 18 points, while Jacob Forte dropped in 12. Jordan Williams added six and Jacob Forte scored seven for MVHS.
