Murrieta Mesa girls basketball crushed Sultana High School from Hesperia 60-30 on its way to winning the Bette Smith Girls Basketball Classic in Hemet.
Coach Robert Gergins' Rams started the tournament by beating the Bulldogs from Hemet High School in the opening round 35-22. Believe it or not, that was their toughest opponent in the contest.
The Rams proceeded to trounce the Cardinals from Mesa Grande by 20 points, winning 51-31. They then faced Banning High School in the semi-finals. The Broncos were overwhelmed and the Rams and cruised to a 51-27 victory to advance to the Championship.
Murrieta Mesa dominated from the beginning and was unrelenting, winning it all 60-30—a very convincing win for the 9-3 Rams.
Shayd Bowers scored 15 points in the final game to lead the Rams. Mikayla Green and Katie Smith both scored 13 while Octavia Williams added seven points. Jackie Pulatie and Kiersta Tanner both scored six.
The Rams will next play the Poly Bears in the opening round of the Lady Bears Holiday Classic at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 26 at Poly High School in Riverside.
In other local girls basketball action, the Vista Murrieta Broncos defeated the Bears from Warren High School in Downey in a squeaker 47-43, improving their record to 9-2.
The Broncos will be competing in the West Coast Holiday Festival Tournament beginning Dec. 26. The tournament is held at St. Paul and Norco high schools.
