Girls Basketball: Broncos, Nighthawks Win League Openers

Vista Murrieta and Murrieta Valley girls basketball victorious; Rams fall to Chaparral.

The Vista Murrieta varsity Lady Broncos took early control during their first Southwestern League game of the season Wednesday, coasting to a 61-25 victory over the Temecula Valley Golden Bears.

Jaelyn Brown led the Vista Murrieta attack with 15 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Brittney Reed scored 14 points with nine rebounds and five steals. Senior captain Serafina Maulupe added 11 points and six rebounds. Leitasi Cravens added eight points, while Alexis Rivas brought six.

The Broncos will be at Great Oak at 7 p.m. Friday.

Murrieta Valley took on the Wolfpack and won 48-40 in a game that was determined in the third period when the Nighthawks outscored Great Oak 20-8.

Captains Karen Wolf and Deshea Wilkes led the Nighthawks. Wolf had 10 points and 14 rebounds while Wilkes scored nine with 11 rebounds. Brynn Dahmer and Aliah Marshall contributed eight points each, Alex Morrison had seven and Ariana Hernandez six.

Murrieta Mesa fell victim to the Pumas in their league opener. Chaparral came out on top 49-38 as the Rams prolific offense stalled.

Captain Shayd Bowers had the hot hand for the Rams last night, scoring 21 points. Jackie Pulatie was also in double figures for Mesa with 10 points.

The Rams will host the Nighthawks at 7 p.m. Friday. Come out and support your local high school girls basketball team.
