Library Volunteer Training for Students

Students who want to be productive, have fun, and learn valuable job skills while earning community service credits are welcome to volunteer at the Murrieta Public Library this summer. The Library is currently accepting students ages 12 to 18 as volunteers for the 2012 Summer Reading Program and will conduct two training sessions - one on May 19 at 1:30 p.m. and another on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room for those who wish to volunteer.

The purpose of the Library’s Summer Reading Program is to motivate children and teens to maintain their reading habits or improve their reading skills throughout the summer and to have fun while they are reading. The student volunteers will assist the library staff with such tasks as setting up activities, monitoring reading logs, and handing out incentives to the Reading Program participants. “This is a perfect opportunity for teens to learn good job skills and habits” stated Youth Services Librarian Allison Eagans. “Only those teens who are willing to interact with and provide a great service to the participating children should apply as a volunteer. The Library will require a 10 hour minimum commitment from each volunteer this summer.” It is not necessary for the students to attend both training sessions, but participation at one of the trainings is required to volunteer at the Library.

Each training session space is limited to the first 30 applicants. Details regarding hours needed, preferred skills and other requirements will be shared at the training sessions. Parents are also encouraged to attend the training session with the teen.

This event is open to the public. The Murrieta Public Library is located at 8 Town Square (Adams Avenue and Kalmia Street). For more information about the program call (951) 304-BOOK (2665) or visit the Library’s web site at www.murrietalibrary.info.
