For the seventh year, the Luiseño Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring an American History Essay Contest and local students are encouraged to participate.

Students at public and private schools, as well as home-schooled students are eligible to enter, said Bonnie Hayosh, spokesperson for the Chapter, which meets in Murrieta.

The Chapter is seeking entries from students in Southwest Riverside County communities.

Fifth- through eighth-graders can enter the American History Essay contest. The topic is to pretend they were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting but dangerous time. They should describe the person and how he or she stood up for America, as well as explain why it is important to honor such heroes as the country celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 next year.

High school students in ninth through 12th grades can enter the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The topic is to describe Christopher Columbus as he was understood in three different time periods: What did 15th century people think about his accomplishments? How did 19th-century historians view him? How did Columbus, who had primitive ships and no computers or modern navigation equipment, affect our lives today?

Any students interested in writing are urged participate. Forms, instructions and suggested reading materials can be obtained from chairman Fern Kieta via email at fernkieta@yahoo.com. The due date for essays is Nov. 28.

"The knowledge that the students gain by researching and creatively thinking about the subjects, the more informed they will be," Hayosh said.

Last year’s Luiseño Chapter high school winner went on to win the district award and was entered in the DAR state contest, according to Hayosh.
