4 MSJC Students Earn Statewide Honors; Head to Sacramento

Four MSJC students—from Murrieta, Lake Elsinore, San Jacinto and Temecula—will receive Statewide Honors Awards on March 6 in Sacramento.

By Karin Marriott, Mt. San Jacinto College

Mt. San Jacinto College is proud to announce that four of its honors students have been selected for the statewide First Team in the 2013 Phi Theta Kappa Academic Team Awards.

The four All-California Academic Team nominees, Shayla Esarey, Nik Warren, Clarice Gerbl and Sarah Stebbings, will attend an awards luncheon March 6 in Sacramento.

In a single whirlwind day, these exceptional scholars will be recognized for all of the hard work and contributions they have made to the Mt. San Jacinto College community. The program, administered by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Community College League of California, recognizes community college students based on their grades, academic rigor, growth and how well the students use their education to benefit their schools and communities.

It is unprecedented that all four of these women have placed on the first of three team rankings, which makes each eligible for selection for the Coca-Cola Community College Scholarship, the All-USA Academic Team, and the New Century Scholar Award, said Nick Reeves, MSJC’s PTK adviser.

"In the 5 years I have been PTK adviser, I have never seen all of our nominees place on the First Team together,” Reeves said. “Receiving a First Team ranking means that all of our students are still in the running for any of the scholarships offered through this application process. I am so proud of our students. This is going to be an exciting luncheon.”

Majors of the students:

Shayla Esarey, Temecula resident: Political Science with minors in History and Psychology

Nik Warren, Murrieta resident: Health Science

Sarah Stebbings, Lake Elsinore resident: Neuroscience

Clarice Gerbl, San Jacinto resident: Science

This couldn't possibly happen in a worse place, given the proximity to the freeway, high school, andRead More numerous businesses. UGH! The following is the press release from MPD: On 05-21-13, at 3:27 AM, the Murrieta Police Department received a call of a water-main break in the area of California Oaks Road and Monroe Avenue. Murrieta Police and Murrieta Fire Department initially responded to the scene and discovered a large sinkhole in the westbound lanes of California Oaks Road just west of Jackson Avenue. The sinkhole was approximately 4 feet deep and about 20 feet across. The hydraulic pressure from the water-main break appears to have created this sinkhole and damaged all the westbound lanes of California Oaks from approximately Jackson to Monroe. As a result, the westbound lanes of California Oaks between Jackson and Monroe will be closed for repair until further notice. Rancho Water Officials estimate that these repairs will take approximately one week to complete. When traveling in this area please expect delays and plan an alternate route in order to arrive at your destination on time.

Hey Maggie, I don't get a chance to talk to the help desk but the ad has gone away for now. I justRead More made a comment on one of Carl Petersons blogs and now the comment has disappeared and no trace of it in my comment history. Are comments still pending proof reading before they post? Was it taken down by the blog author? I realize you guys have made a lot of changes so I'm still not sure if there are bugs being worked out or if some thing else is going on. Any help would be appreciated.
