Riverside County Residents Leave $2.3 Million Unclaimed in Tax Refunds

Did you claim your refund? After August 1, 2014, any money left unclaimed will become the property of the county and can no longer be claimed.

From the Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office:

Chairman of the Board and Third District Supervisor, Jeff Stone, along with Treasurer-Tax Collector, Don Kent, would like to notify Riverside County property owners and businesses that they have until August 1, 2014 to file claims for unclaimed property tax refunds.  

Filing instructions and a listing of all unclaimed property tax refunds from tax year 2009 and prior is now available on the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website here.

According to Don Kent, there are 2,214 refunds totaling $2,344,366.69 that remain unclaimed.  

Largely due to valuation reductions by the County Assessor, most of the refunds are a result of corrections or cancellations to the tax roll after taxes had already been paid.  

California state law provides that property tax refunds that remain unclaimed for four years after the payment date or one year after the mailing of the claim form, (whichever is later) may be transferred to the county general fund by order of the Board of Supervisors.  After August 1, 2014, any money left unclaimed will become the property of the county and can no longer be claimed.
