Riverside County Offices to Open Again on Fridays

Since the county is no longer implementing mandatory furloughs, staff is expected to return to a normal Monday through Friday schedule this summer.

After nearly four years of county offices being closed on Fridays, those needing to conduct business on these days will soon be able to do so.

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve a schedule adjustment Tuesday at their meeting.  This will implement a return to a workweek of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., effective July 25.

"As of August 13, 2009, the County of Riverside closed many facilities including the County Administrative Center on Fridays in an effort to save money, to prevent/reduce layoffs, and as a measure to ensure sufficient coverage while employees furloughed," a staff report to the board from the county human resources department said.

Since that time, most county buildings were open for business Monday through Friday, for ten hours each day.  Emergency, public safety and some other services were exempt from this schedule.

"As employees are no longer subject to mandatory furloughs, the use of the synchronized 4/10 schedule for the County Administrative Center (CAC) and other non-24-hour operations no longer accommodates the business needs of the County or the public we serve," the staff report said.

The staff report says the schedule adjustment will "assure" the county "returns to service levels that were available prior to cost-saving initiatives..."  It won't go in effect until the end of July, though, to give workers time to adjust things like child care arrangements.
