Progress Being Made on Murrieta Trail System

"Our goal is to improve and enhance the trail system throughout the city—we are looking everywhere," said Assistant City Manager and Community Services Director Jim Holston.

Hikers, bikers, walkers and horse riders can be confident that a multi-use trail system throughout Murrieta is getting closer to becoming a reality, city officials said this week.

"There are still a lot of moving parts but our efforts are well underway," said Murrieta City Councilman Alan Long, who serves on a trails committee.

The ad hoc committee has been meeting bi-weekly since its formation was by Murrieta city council.

The committee includes Long, Assistant City Manager Jim Holston, Park Maintenance Superintendent Bob Kast, Recreation Supervisor Colby Diuguid and resident Jay Froboese.

"So far we have created a map of trails that will double what we have today," Long said, noting the map was not yet finalized or ready for publication. "We are working on connecting our trails and establishing new trails where we can."

Long, a Murrieta native, said he has been working toward an improved trail system since he took office in December 2010.

"It is very exciting," Long said.

Holston also confirmed that progress was being made.

"It is moving forward and we are going to be making additions sometime here in the future to our trail system," Holston said. "Our goal is to improve and enhance the trail system throughout the city—we are looking everywhere."

Once plans are finalized, Holston said city officials would be putting a call out for trail volunteers, but said "we are not quite at that point yet."
