Poll: Should Congress Act on Gun Control, Answer Obama Call?

President tells Newtown, nation: “These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change.”

Amid a growing national call for tougher gun control, President Obama told a vigil Sunday in Newtown, CT: “We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law, no set of laws, can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can’t be an excuse for inaction.”

Given political realities—including the National Rifle Association's defense of Second Amendment rights and Republican control of the House of Representatives—change could be difficult.

Obama is aware of that, but said: “Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town ... then surely we have an obligation to try.”

Should Washington lawmakers tackle this issue?

Today President Obama signed 23 executive orders to crack down on gun criminals, expand access to mental health services and make our schools safer. He also laid out the crucial priorities that we’ll be fighting for in the months ahead -- priorities that will save lives, including: Fixing our broken background check system and requiring a background check for ALL gun sales. -Getting assault weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets. -Making gun trafficking a federal crime with tough penalties for offenders. -Funding public research on gun violence and gun crime that will make law enforcement more efficient and effective. Of course we know what to expect from the NRA. More denial, high pressure lobbying of congress and repeating their tragic and flawed logic regarding guns.
