Palomar Mountain Campgrounds Reopened

After six months of being closed, the state park was scheduled to reopen today.

After being closed for six months, the campgrounds at Palomar Mountain State Park were scheduled to reopen today, allowing Murrieta residents the chance to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Campers can claim sites on a first-come, first-serve basis through the weekend, and reservations will be available next week through Reserve America, park officials told the North County Times.

"The weather is going to be horrible, but we will be open," said Nedra Martinez, the local state parks superintendent, to the paper.

Budget cuts closed the facility in October and nearly closed the entire park, but a fundraising campaign this winter by the Friends of Palomar Mountain State Park saved the day.

The organization struck a three-year deal with the state under which the will pay $60,000 annually to keep the park open.
