Murrieta 'Hearts' Temecula

Three Murrieta City Council members and two officials showed up Tuesday to Temecula's City Council meeting wearing T-shirts reading, "I (heart) Temecula," on the front.

Temecula and Murrieta’s city councils made a bet.

Whichever team finished second during the Reality Rally, a recent fundraising event, would show up to the other city’s council meeting wearing shirts proclaiming their love for the neighboring city.

Temecula won, so three Murrieta City Council members and two officials showed up Tuesday to Temecula’s City Council meeting wearing T-shirts reading, “I (heart) Temecula,” on the front.

As the Murrieta officials walked into the room, the Temecula City Council members put on red baseball caps reading, “I (heart) Murrieta,” on the fronts.

The Murrieta council members thought they would have the last laugh, but after seeing the Temecula council members put on the hats, they felt kind of bad, said Murrieta Mayor Randon Lane. Then they turned around to reveal the backs of their shirts, which read, “But not as much as Murrieta.”

The officials laughed as Temecula Councilmember Maryanne Edwards turned her hat backwards to hide the writing.

The Reality Rally happened in April and sent teams of locals on an “Amazing Race”-style treasure hunt with about 100 reality television stars.

Gillian Larson, the organizer of the event who appeared on “Survivor: Gabon,” was at the meeting to receive a certificate of recognition.

The event raised thousands of dollars for Michelle’s Place, which provides breast cancer-related services.
