McAllister Takes Over as Mayor of Murrieta

"I do not have any illusion of what this means, it is simply a seniority thing," Doug McAllister said about being appointed mayor. "I am ready to get to work."

Doug McAllister was selected Tuesday to serve a one-year term as the mayor of Murrieta.

The mayor is appointed on a rotational basis, and according to a resolution approved by City Council in 2010, is the person who is most senior on the Council and who has previously served as mayor pro tem.

Council member Rick Gibbs will replace McAllister as mayor pro tem, and Randon Lane returns as a Council member.

Prior to exchanging seats Tuesday, Randon Lane spoke about his term as mayor. He said his goal while mayor was to work toward improving infrastructure in the city.

"I have had the opportunity to preside over a ribbon cutting at a brand new hospital, on the Clinton Keith bridge, on the new bridge on Ivy Street," Lane said.

He said he also worked to foster open communication with his constituents.

"One of the biggest things I have put out is outreach to the community. My goal from day one was to be more connected with residents.

"It has been an honor, it has been a joy, and it has been a privilege to serve this community."

Though he will no longer be acting as mayor of Murrieta, Lane was selected to serve on the board of directors for the National League of Cities for 2012.

The terms of both Lane and McAllister end in December 2012. Neither have publicly announced whether they will run for re-election. Lane is in his first term and McAllister in his second.

"I do not have any illusion of what this means, it is simply a seniority thing," McAllister said about being appointed mayor. "I am ready to get to work.

"One major goal is to introduce to the world the real Murrieta. Our tag line is
'The Future of Southern California,' that is an audacious statement, but I know this is true."
