Loud Blasts May be Heard from Camp Pendleton

Explosions from a mine-clearing line charge on Camp Pendleton may be heard this week from up to 50 miles away.

Explosions from mine-clearing training exercises set to begin at Camp Pendleton today may be heard up to 50 miles away, base officials said.

The training, which will involve detonating 1,750 pounds of linked C-4 explosives, is scheduled to run from 6 a.m. to midnight through Friday. The explosives will be used to create a breach in minefields under combat conditions, according to the base public affairs office.

The mine clearing line charge exercises will be conducted in the Whiskey and Zulu training areas near the center of the base, as will mortar live fire training scheduled for Wednesday through Friday afternoons, said Robert Klenk of Range Operations.
