Inland Empire's Obamacare Enrollment Figures Released; Numbers Less Than Predicted

A total 39,474 residents of Riverside and San Bernardino counties signed up for subsidized and unsubsidized Covered California health insurance plans by the end of the year.

By the end of 2013, the number of uninsured Inland Empire residents who enrolled in healthcare plans offered through the state's health insurance exchange was about half of what was expected, according to figures released Friday.

California Department of Health Care Services officials said that from the time Covered California began enrolling people Oct. 1 to year's end, a total 39,474 residents of Riverside and San Bernardino counties signed up for subsidized and unsubsidized health insurance.

The state had projected 76,069 enrollees over the three-month span.

Figures showed 23,417 uninsured Riverside County residents and 16,057 San Bernardino County residents signed up.

Based on a six-month projection of enrollees through the first quarter of 2014, the California Department of Health Care Services had predicted 40,377 for Riverside and 35,692 for San Bernardino.

Data indicated that enrollments in neighboring Orange and San Diego counties have exceeded expectations, at 113 and 105 percent, respectively.

Total statewide enrollment in health insurance plans using Covered California was 500,108 -- about 14 percent below projections.

Covered California is the state's health insurance "marketplace" through which plans are offered to people regardless of income or health status. The exchange was established under the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act of 2010, better known as Obama Care.

Individuals, families and small businesses are eligible to use the portal, but can also continue to shop in the private sector for coverage, which is mandatory under Obama Care.

Covered California estimates that in 2014, 2.6 million state residents who previously could not afford health insurance will be able to obtain it, in some cases with taxpayer-backed "premium payment assistance," which includes enrollment in Medi-Cal.

Private insurance carriers offering plans via the exchange include Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Health Net and Kaiser Permanente.

Tables and graphics showing enrollment by metal tier and health insurance plan in each region are available online at https://www.CoveredCA.com/news/PDFs/regional-stats-dec/dec-regionals-all.pdf and https://www.CoveredCA.com/news/PDFs/regional-stats-dec/RegionalEnrollmentTables.pdf.

Just keep in mind the figure for califorina enrollment- 1/2 of what was expected. That says it all. And KristinC and the others who have crossed Klieners path- as he likes to say- be afraid, be very afraid. Now we wll see how long it takes for him to attack me- no he already did. And him criticizing Aaron about not being at work is rich- at least Aaron has a job. We all know Jeff does not- unless you call his amateur web site a job.
Jeff Kleiner February 03, 2014 at 04:03 PM
What is liberalism kristin??? I can define conservatism by what so called conservatives like you say. No other news source except conservative hate sites like Townhall, World Net Daily, NewsMax, Fox, Breitbart. These are the ONLY sites that you could have gotten your information from. They have been checked by Fact Checks and been found as untrue, misleading or out and out lies. You cannot prove to this blog that you see through tunnel vision but I will give you my email and have your friends email me and I will make sure they are covered and then you report back as I will....jeff_kleiner@hotmail.com. I am proud of what I believe as does more than half of this country. If you love God, as I do, what have you done for poor people, the indigent, disabled, battered women? Where do you stand on these issues? If you wanted Romney, and thought he would do more, then why would he discount 47% of people as not important?? Do you think Obama or Romney would live up to helping the poor more? So tell your friends I can help them with insurance problems, because seemingly, you are either a liar or you will do EVERYTHING possible to help your friends.......we will see if you contact me?????????? ROFLMAO. I am calling you out as a liar!
Steve Newman February 03, 2014 at 04:30 PM
Kleiner- there you go posting your e-mail again- not enough people on the patch to harass. And how are you going to "cover" the people without insurance- you are not an insurance agent- tell us Mr Toad, how is that going to happen.?
Jeff Kleiner February 03, 2014 at 04:31 PM
Here's the non-psycho kristin c's statements: "impeach obama and repeal obamacare"; "when they open up obamacare to the illegals, the rest of the 2.6 million will sign up"; "I took don't mind helping the poor but when the government spends our tax money on stuff like solyndra and countless bailouts, then forces all of america to plunge into a healthcare that hurts more people than it helps ", don't tell her the bailout happened the first time under Bush and SOLYNDRA?????? LOL!!! "Food stamps have gone up 70% since obama took office" Food stamps are not controlled by the President but by Congress who just cut them back by 5 billions dollars and Obama signed off. "The financial burdenour ggovernment has placed on itself is really placed on the backs of every working american and our backs are about to break" this is where kristin's jealousy comes from. She works her minimum wage job and is horrified that some poor people need help.....wonderful Christian right? "I believe obamacare is the single biggest reason democrats will be crossing party lines next election." If I recall kristin c said Romeny would win the election and when he didn't she disappeared off the blog. "I withold my last name to prevent psychos like you from looking me up." I have no reason to look you up and would not care to know someone with a simple mind like yours. "I dont rely on tv media for my facts.. I even think for myself too" Yes we can tell by the facts you write. "I know of an elderly woman with cancer who was receiving treatment under her current policy and was recently dropped. Now nomond will insure her because of her cancer and she doesnt qualify for subsidies." First part of your statement is a out and out lie.....pre-existing conditions DO NOT disqualify anyone from affordable insurance. So that statement is a lie. My wife's Doctor's wife is a healthcare expert and she will help her get BETTER insurance than she had for an affordable cost. Again for your pregnant friend, she cannot be denied affordable insurance for a pregnancy. So we know thats another OUT AND OUT LIE.....you said you were Christian. Isn't lying part of the Ten Commandments? Take your lies to your Conservative websites....they will pat you on the back, but here your lies will be called out.

You all make sad. I'm gay, a Christian and I have Obamacare because being a small business owner no one would cover me with a disease I have called Giant Cell Tumor. You guys all go on the defensive in your comments. No one is really trying to place themselves in the others shoes. Keep in mind how a like you just might be regardless of your politics which are full of wind & ambition. Fox News lies constantly because I watch all news I'm able to fact check myself and can find the fine line that is the truth. You guys should let go of some of the more angry comments & if you have an opinion to give me then ill read it and try to understand your point of view just as I hope u will with me. Thank you Robbie

OZ as regards my health insurance through United Healthcare Advantage....my cost HAVE NOT INCREASED in the four years Ive been covered. I have it taken directly out of my check. I did however receive a 156 dollar check from United Healthcare because of the law which returns a percentage of money to the insured if not spent on healthcare. I also posted my email and I can send you a comparison of my Prescription reduction in cost as it helped closing the doughnut hole. I can also show you kristin, if you email me, the copy of my monthly long term disability payment, $5900 and my SSDI PAYMENT of $2900 which I get monthly. My wife works as a nurse, however, her salary is about half of my monthly benefits which is based on your salary at time of disability.
Jeff Kleiner February 03, 2014 at 05:27 PM
Thanks for sharing Robbie.....sorry about your condition. Life deals all of us some horrible blows. Sorry for yours. But I'm so glad that Obamacare may have taken that load a little bit off your mind.
kristin c February 03, 2014 at 06:14 PM
Jeffy, aren't you the one calling the kettle black. I can tell a liberal leftist by what they say. And how on earth can you sit there on your throne mocking people the way you do in every conversation and claim to love God? I never claimed Bush was good for this country. Bush made a lot of mistakes as well which is why we have a democrat in office now. I believed Romney would win and he didn't.. I didn't disappear from anything. I make comments on these things here and there. I get tired of defending myself to people like you as I know you enjoy being sarcastic and hateful. Yes, my friend was denied coverage, regardless of what the law is. She lives in Missouri, not California so I'm not sure if theyre as on board with Obamacare as California is. And my pregnant friend was finally able to get coverage but no doctor would see her so far along in her pregnancy. My point is these people were already covered and lost their coverage causing an interruption in their care. And as for your lies or assumptions, I'm not jealous of anyone and I don't work a minimum wage job. But if I did, I would be proud as Pete to have such a job as I would be working for the money I earned. You sit on your computer, insulting people for standing on their beliefs while you collect your welfare check and food stamps. Pretty ripe Buster. I'm not afraid of your snide comments or insults.. bring em on. If it makes you feel good to project yourself onto others then so be it... what's ironic is I was actually thinking you were the simple minded one. I'd sure like to see a picture of you rolling on the floor laughing because you like to do it a lot.. don't you get sore down there?
kristin c February 03, 2014 at 06:40 PM
Robert, I'm sorry you have cancer. My dad died of lung cancer and now my mom has it, stage 4, small cell. You're right... putting yourself in others' shoes can change one's perspective on things. I'm sorry that these comments offend you as that is certainly not anyone's intention. A lot of us have been burned by obamacare and obamas lies and it has fueled a nationwide feud between political parties. Arguing on a blog like this doesn't really do much to change the country's situation but it seems like a good outlet when you want to vent. I'm done commenting here.. take care everyone
ChrisG February 03, 2014 at 07:32 PM
@jeff, you and your foolish libs are creating a country of haves and have nots.
ChrisG February 03, 2014 at 07:37 PM
@robert, it saddens me that you are sick. That your ore existing condition meant it was difficult to get insurance. I'm sure you understand there were better ways to help people in your situation than ACA. ACA has cancelled more people that were insured than people without pre existing conditions that were not insured. ACA has doubled my insurance rate in three years. I know you understand that you have a bigger burden in terms of cost of healthcare than someone who is healthy. I don't pretend to have an answer for your predict ament but the ACA is not a good solution for the vast majority of us. Why didn't they try cost reductions in health care? Why not high risk insurance pools for people like you?
Robert Parks February 03, 2014 at 08:29 PM
Thank you Chris, I understand its very flawed and that is why I always wanted Hillary as Pres. My heart hurts for anyone who cannot get what others can so easily. I was one of them for so long & lost a lot of hard earned money because no one would cover me. I love my country but I also am very embarrassed by our leaders yes you Bridgegate! And the way we are so far one way that there is no meeting of the minds. Everyone has more common ground then they realize but everyone is so pig headed.
ChrisG February 04, 2014 at 08:34 AM
@robert, I agree there is common ground but not with Hilary. Yikes! She scares the crap out of me. She's not competent to be president.
oz1901 February 04, 2014 at 01:05 PM
kristin c you've taken the bait...you should stop! The Jeff Kleiners of the world want to lure you into their hateful world with nasty rhetoric and personal attacks on one's character and a constant blathering of blah, blah, blah! No matter where you might stand on any given issue, if it disagrees with whatever notions of reality he might have, you will be attacked. As for his attacks on those who watch Fox News, he must have "Alamo Reality Disconnect Syndrome" (ARDS): a condition of being encircled, while refusing to yield to reality. A simple internet search would show the overwhelming ratings Fox News Channel enjoys over its competitors. He is of the same bent that has MSNBC apologizing on an almost weekly basis for its patently stupid (and racist) on air personas comments. His commentary indicates that he probably bounces between MSNBC, Huffington Post, Media Matters and Politico for his "facts"; all Progressive/Liberal outlets. I, like millions of my countrymen, watch FNC regularly! Occasionally I tune in to MSNBC, which makes Mr. Kleiner and myself two of the seventeen viewers they get daily. Why do they enjoy such low ratings? Simple: Chris (thrill up my leg) Mathews, Al (race baiter) Sharpton, Piers (anti Second Amendment) Morgan, Martin (someone should defecate in Sarah Palin's mouth) Basir, Keith Olbermann has been fired more times than one time Yankees manager Billy Martin (an appropriate reference given Olbermann's present gig doing sports commentary). CNN has pretty much become irrelevant in its fall to the ratings cellar; so have once news stalwarts CBS, ABC & NBC. So kirsten c, I recommend you not allow this miscreant to get under your skin. Public Policy Polling (a left leaning polling company) has FNC leading the way as the most trusted news media. Ironically, it also shows them as the least trusted; I suspect because it is by far the most watched, giving it the most brand recognition.
SA February 04, 2014 at 01:52 PM
If the alleged ‘numbers’ are correct, I want to know what the numbers will be when people start defaulting on payments and co-pays …. It is failing and it will continue to fail…
kristin c February 04, 2014 at 02:53 PM
Yes, oz, I know.. what's sad is this isn't the first time. He shows up under different names. I believe he was booted off the patch before. My bad for taking the bait!
kristin c February 04, 2014 at 02:54 PM
@Chris G.. exactly! I don't see how she can run after Benghazi.
ChrisG February 04, 2014 at 03:17 PM
@kristin, don't worry about negative comments of people on here. They cannot match arguments based upon fact and run away. They are bullies.
ChrisG February 04, 2014 at 03:18 PM
@sa, I agree. Plus wait until they find out what is covered and where. This is truly sad.
Robert Parks February 04, 2014 at 05:33 PM
I pray to God that somehow this all gets resolved & I don't get thrown back into absolutely no one covering me. It will destroy my life & I mean that literally. I see u guys going back and forth & it still makes me sad. Stop hating on a comment regardless if u disagree, state your point and find a silver lining on how to communicate together. I'm asking this of all of you.
TVOR February 04, 2014 at 07:11 PM
Robert, I truly hope you are able to get the best available care for your condition. I just don't think a system like obamacare is the way to do it. Best of luck sir.
Robert Parks February 04, 2014 at 08:05 PM
I would agree with you in theory but its all I got when everyone else said no even though I was willing to pay high rates, I'm considered a risk because there is no cure for me.
SA February 06, 2014 at 03:59 PM
Why should ANYONE have to pay to take care of a stranger, when the strangers can’t take care of their own family? This is not a social issue it is a personal choice to have insurance and/or take care of one’s self … Thank you Liberals for further killing us…
LBV Collins February 06, 2014 at 05:02 PM
@SA: I agree with you that "...it is a personal choice to have insurance and/or take care of one’s self." The problem (as I see it) is that the "personal choice" option was eliminated when the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) was signed into law back in 1986. This forced hospitals to provide emergency care for everyone, whether they could pay for the care or not. So now we have people who either can't afford healthcare, or who CAN afford it but refuse to buy it, dumping their emergency care costs on the rest of us. If hospitals were allowed to refuse treatment to those who could not pay, then healthcare costs would be lower, and the Individual Mandate would not be necessary to force otherwise healthy people into the insurance pool. (BTW: Ronald Reagan signed EMTALA into law. Also, the Individual Mandate is a Republican idea. So I don't think we can solely blame liberals.)
SA February 06, 2014 at 05:42 PM
@Collins ... Good Point and taken onboard ...
Robert Parks February 06, 2014 at 10:12 PM
Hey some of us could and would pay for it but got a huge DENIED everytime because of a disease that has no cure. Remember everyone has different circumstances.
LBV Collins February 07, 2014 at 09:28 AM
@Robert Parks: To quote SA, "... Good Point and taken onboard ..." ;)
ChrisG February 07, 2014 at 10:02 AM
Yes, good point. It's too bad they didn't focus on that small problem (I know it is not small to you Robert) to fix and lower costs for the rest of us instead of destroying the entire system as they are quickly in the process of doing.
