Homeless Veterans To Be Counted In Riverside County On Jan. 29

Results from the count will give county agencies current information to determine what services and housing resources are needed to end homelessness among veterans in Riverside County by 2015.

The following is a news release from the County of Riverside:

The County of Riverside is one of 16 cities/counties across the nation selected to do a point-in-time count of homeless veterans tomorrow (Jan. 29) in cities and communities throughout Riverside County.  Teams of volunteers from veterans’ groups, county and community-based organizations will be deployed from sites all over the county to begin canvassing at 6 a.m.

The County of Riverside Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) received $45,800 from the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs to focus on homeless veterans in a special “point-in-time” count that is part of the Obama Administration’s national priority to end homelessness among veterans by 2015.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires cities and counties that receive funding for homeless programs to do a biennial point in time count of all homeless people.  The last point-in-time of the county’s homeless population was done last January. (Click here to read about the counts in Murrieta.)

The Veterans’ point-in-time count is also part of a countywide task force created in May by the county’s Board of Supervisors.  The Veterans Assistance Leadership of Riverside County or VALOR was initiated to honor, support and assist veterans in the county with quality of life issues such as homelessness, healthcare, education and job training.

The primary deployment center for the veterans point-in-time count will be at U.S. VETS – Inland Empire (United States Veterans Initiative), a national nonprofit organization that provides transitional housing and supportive services to homeless and at-risk veterans at March Air Reserve Base. The address is 15105 6th St., MARB, 92518.

Results from the count will give VALOR and other county agencies current information to determine what services and housing resources are needed to end homelessness among veterans in Riverside County by 2015.  The homeless survey last January counted 285 homeless veterans.
