Gun Control Tops Concerns At Event Hosted By Assemblywoman

“California has the strictest gun control measures in the country and as a gun owner myself, I understand their frustration," Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez said.

Murrieta's Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore) welcomed about 50 constituents at her first community coffee of the year at Flour Fusion Bakery in Lake Elsinore.

Melendez, who was elected to office in November, began the monthly coffee meetings while on the Lake Elsinore city council and intends to keep up the monthly tradition as a representative of the 67th Assembly District.

“The best way to know what is on the minds of our residents, is to ask them,” said Melendez.  “These informal meetings are a great way to meet the people I represent and listen tot heir concerns.”

The overwhelming topic of discussion at the Feb. 22 meeting was gun control.

“The steps our State Legislature and the Federal Government are intending to take on gun control has a lot of people concerned,” said Melendez, who serves as Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee.  “California has the strictest gun control measures in the country and as a gun owner myself, I understand their frustration.”

Melendez also briefed the assembled crowd on her proposed legislation. Last week, she put forward her first bill, the California Military Families Financial Act of 2013, to alleviate financial burdens for military personnel serving overseas. The bill intends to expand upon the original California Military Families Act.

“The California Military Families Financial Act is very important to me something,” she explained.  “When my husband deployed to Afghanistan a few years ago, the protections in the original bill helped us and by expanding on the original intent of the bill, we’ll be able to help more military men and women.”

Melendez plans on hosting a community coffee each month, and rotate locations throughout all the communities in the 67th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar and a portion of Hemet.

Lake Elsinore City Councilman Steve Manos attended the meeting at Flour Fusion last week and said he was impressed at how Melendez drew a standing-room only crowd.

"Not only did she take time to present a detailed update of the current matters of the State, she also demonstrated a considerable depth of knowledge and candor while responding to questions and comments from constituents for well over an hour. She clearly places a priority on being accessible to the public and listening to the needs of the people she represents," Manos said. --Contributed content

Please define “rapid fire” as I have several guns that fire as fast as I pull the trigger and I have several bolt action / single action that require chambering prior to firing. Ignorance is a killer my so well informed friend. People like yourself; find it easy to attack other peoples’ morals.

No No No … According to Biden we are supposed to take our shotguns outside shoot it two times in the air when we are accosted by an intruder, that is the proper way to teach your family on how to handle a firearm…. (sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm) … I totally agree with you. “Excuse me Mr. Killer let me reload or open my safe and load before you rape and pillage my family” .

I am extremely experienced with weapons and dealing with criminals.Target range shooting under high light and low stress and fear conditions is totally different than firing a weapon with the knowledge that you hear someone in your home. I have been through this. The stress and fear is an adrenalne rush. I fired 8 rounds and missed a moving target exiting my home in the dark.Thank God i had 22 rounds left just in case there were two people. The intruder was lucky. In spite of my target range skills I missed. My hands were shaking from the experience. People like Shane read and like Joe Biden offer theoreticals without experience. They think they know better by repeating the ideology they absorb through the written word and TV. Preaching with no experience and political fakery never wins over real life testimonials. Weapons are why the violent crime rate and rape rate in the U.S. is so much lower than Europe. Would you rather whistle while you're raped Shane? This is what Democrats preach.Or would you rather fire back as the the second amendment allows many to do?. People in conceal and carry states fire back . It is proven that weapons deter criminal activity. Citizens deserve to have better weapons than criminals.

Assault rifles are designed for one thing, killing people. It is for that reason they should not allow people like Shane to own one, he does not possess the ability to identify the appropriate targets, he thinks they are for killing Bambie in the woods. I personally do not see a reason to spend close to 3k (they were $1500 pre Sandy Hook, now you can;t find one) on a AR because of the craze that the potential of the ban has created. I do not see a reason for a homeowner to own one. However, I will not give up my war trophies. I spent close to 6 tours in combat and deal with the aftermath daily to collect and earn them. Will I ever fire them again? Probably not. I will say this again, while I do not like this agenda from Ms. Fienstien and our Commander in Chief, and I despise them, using public fear from Sandy Hook to push it. I absolutely agree with California screening, some people should not be able to own a gun, unfortunately, it will not change the criminals, gang members and mentally unstable from getting their hands on them. It just makes it more difficult to purchase legally and sell or profit from those that we may already own. The really sad part is that my Fathers collection will be destroyed when he passes as he cannot transfer them to either of us boys (I do not want them but my brother does). At any rate, they will not get a "ban" through, but things do need to be reviewed, the laws are old and flawed.

I am sure that is exactly what our Commander in Chief want to be know for "really is gun control, AMNESTY and gay rights, followed closely by birth control, abortion rights and healthcare. " I sure hope he does something better with his next 3 years. This Country used to be Great, we used to innovate and build, now we outsource and tax. If I did not bring home B grades I was considered a failure, now a D passes and C grade get you buy. I call that Average. What is causing it? I do not know, but we are in serious decline, and I do not think gun control will fix it. While I do not consider myself a conservative, I have never met or read of one here on the Patch that actually wants to shoot people Shane, who are you referring to? Your parents? Angry with your Dad? Angry with Authority? Or just a burning desire to shoot people, which why you cannot own a gun? Please. stop assuming that everyone is like you, a programmed robot that just spits out their political party lines....Most of us actually think for ourselves and do not just go along with the party. While I do consider myself a republican (not to be confused with a Conservative radical), I possess many, many non-republican views. Radicals of ANY type need to be put in check, I do not care what political party, religion (the church is joke between Christian bombing Federal Buildings and abortion clinics and Catholics not being able to figure out abstinence means with the same sex too) or other Organization .
