Clinton Keith Road is six lanes near the high school, while Washington and Jackson avenues are four lanes.

"City staff, along with the Police Department, identified the three locations as good candidates to install solar-powered radar feedback signs along with flashing beacons, for notification to motorists of their speed within school zones during school hours when children are present," wrote Bob Moehling, city of Murrieta engineering manager, in a staff report.

Bids were taken for the work, with the lowest bidder being Sierra Pacific Electrical Contracting at $70,450, according to the staff report.

The project is part of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan that was approved in 2011-2012 as part of the city's five-year Capital Improvement Plan, according to the report.

Half of the $70,450 will come from Measure A construction funds, and half from Gas Tax construction funds, the report stated.

The contractor agreed to supply the permanent equipment with a one-year warranty. After that, the city's Public Works Maintenance Department will assume upkeep.

Once approved by city council, the signs should be in place within 45 days, the report stated.

"The radar feedback signs/flashing beacon systems are permanent installations that will be utilized on school days when pedestrians are present/walking to/from school and will replace the need for portable trailer mounted signs during these periods," Moehling wrote.
