Council to Vote on $6.35M Contract for Los Alamos/I-15 Overpass

Improvements to the Los Alamos Road/Interstate 15 overpass in Murrieta could get underway as soon as mid-June.

Murrieta City Council is set to hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday during which a construction contract for the Los Alamos Road/Interstate 15 bridge project may be approved.

Council members are expected to discuss and vote on a $6.35-million contract for reconstruction of the overpass.

City staff is recommending that San Diego-based Coffman Specialties Inc.—the lowest responsive bidder of nine—be awarded the contract. Coffman was the lead contractor for HOV lanes on Interstates 15 and 5 in San Diego County.

Acting City Engineer Bob Moehling said once approved by Council, construction could begin as early as mid-June and last for 14 months.

Coordinating the day-to-day operations and providing oversight will be Southstar Engineering & Consulting. City Council at its May 7 meeting awarded Southstar a $1.49-million contract to provide the project management.

The bridge is expected to remain open to through traffic for the duration of the project.

“City Council discussed the full closure of Los Alamos Road over the I-15 during the period of construction and directed staff to keep two lanes of of travel, one in each direction, open...” wrote Moehling in a staff report.

The project was previously approved as one of the city’s capital improvement projects, and is the fifth in seven years for which the city has cooperated with Caltrans.

Funding has been allocated through Proposition 1B, the Riverside County Transportation Commission, and freeway developer impact fees.
