Bono Mack Questions CEO's Statement That Sony 'Can't Guarantee' Online Security

Murrieta's congresswoman, Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, seeks answers from Sony to many unanswered questions about an April security breach of PlayStation users.

Following Sony's chief operation officer warning Tuesday that his company could not guarantee the security of its video-game network, U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack shot back with a letter to Sony questioning the sentiment.

The letter from the Republican Palm Springs resident came on the heels of an April 29 letter that made several queries into the April 20 discovery that personal information had been accessed. Bono Mack called for an investigation into the security breach April 27.

"In today’s Wall Street Journal, Chief Executive Howard Stringer said Sony “can’t guarantee the security of its video-game network … in the ‘bad new world’ of cyber crime. Please explain what he meant, as well as the potential impact on consumers," the letter states.

Bono Mack, who represents residents in Murrieta and other Riverside County cities, chairs the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade.

The committee drafted the letter to seek answers about what caused the Sony's security breach April 17-19, in which a hacker to obtained personal information on more than 70 million users. Names, addresses, birth dates, login information and possibly credit card information of millions of online users were leaked.

The breach caused a shut down of Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems, which consumers use to play online gaming and access music, movies, sports and TV shows.

The PlayStation network was restarted May 14.

In the letter, Bono Mack points out that Sony discovered on May 1 that an additional breach of its network occurred.

"This breach reportedly involved approximately 25 million user accounts at Sony Online Entertainment," Bono Mack wrote.

"Did Sony have a policy in place at the time of either breach addressing data security and data retention practices? If not, why not?"
