3 Murrieta Intersections to Get Safer

Left-turn signals are recommended for Hancock Avenue and Las Brisas Road South/Coliseum Way, as well as Los Alamos Road and Murrieta Gateway.

Traffic signal improvements may soon get underway at three Murrieta intersections in an effort to make them safer for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Murrieta City Council is set to vote Tuesday on awarding a construction contract for the addition of left-turn signals at Hancock Avenue and Las Brisas Road South/Coliseum Way and at Los Alamos Road and Murrieta Gateway.

The accident history at both locations shows a number of broadside accidents, with vehicles turning left into the path of opposing vehicles, Acting City Manager Bob Moehling wrote, in a report prepared for City Council.

The busy Los Alamos Road/Murrieta Gateway intersection provides entrance to a retail center that includes the Post Office and Taco Bell to the north. To the south, it provides access to a gas station, a commercial center and a residential tract.

Hancock Avenue and Las Brisas Road South/Coliseum Way services a residential tract and a large apartment complex.

Also, though there is a left-turn signal at another busy intersection, Murrieta Hot Springs Road and School House Way, the pole would be moved 10 feet from its current location above the through travel lane, Acting City Engineer Bob Moehling wrote, in a report.

Countdown pedestrian timers would also be installed at the three intersections, improvements would be made to pedestrian ramps to meet current ADA requirements, and bicycle loop detection for all lanes would be added.

The city received 11 bids for the work, with the lowest responsible bidder being Upland-based CMV Electric Inc., at $185,832, according to Moehling. The highest bid received was $264,152.

The projects will be funded by revenues from gas taxes and developer agreements, according to Moehling's report.

The work is an agenda item during an upcoming City Council meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, One Town Square.

Also on Tuesday's agenda is an update from City Councilman Alan Long regarding a December workshop attended by the Murrieta Fire Department, American Medical Response and the Riverside County Emergency Medical Services Agency. The three agencies discussed ambulance service and medical response times within the city.
