UPDATED: I-215 Closed After Bridge Collapses in Perris Big Rig Crash

Update 11 p.m. Tuesday: 
 
Caltrans officials say that the northbound side of Interstate 215 in Perris remains closed near the site of a partial bridge collapse, and that it's not expected to reopen until morning. 
 
As for the southbound side, intermittent lane closures will begin at Perris Boulevard at midnight and last through the night, according to Caltrans. 
 
The agency says the northbound lanes, which are closed between Ethanac and Nuevo, are expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday. 

Update 11:35 a.m.: 
 
A Caltrans representative says that the northbound side of Interstate 215 will remain closed for several hours as the crash site is cleared.

The southbound side of I-215 will open "at any minute" once CHP checks the area one more time, Caltrans District 8 Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga tells Patch.  It's currently closed at Nuevo.
 
"And for the northbound [closure], our estimate is 12 hours," she said by telephone shortly after 11:30 a.m.
 
The northbound closure begins at Ethanac. 
 
According to Kasinga, crews believe that the big rig slammed into the falsework, or beams, supporting the under-construction bridge-- which was actually scheduled to have concrete poured on it tonight prior to this crash. 

There is a 17-foot clearance under the bridge, according to Caltrans.
 
This isn't the first time this construction site has faced a roadblock.  Almost one year ago exactly, on July 9, 2013, a big rig hauling a mobile home crashed into the site, causing a similar closure and ensuing traffic nightmare.

In that incident, one person was hospitalized.  No injuries have been reported in today's crash.

A tractor-trailer has rolled over and caused part of a bridge to collapse on northbound Interstate 215 south of Nuevo Road in Perris, a county fire department spokeswoman says. 

All lanes are blocked, according to the California Highway Patrol.  The agency first reported the crash at 10:02 a.m.
 
Part of the bridge, which is in a construction zone, fell into northbound lanes, according to the CHP.
 
Caltrans says the northbound lanes of the freeway are closed at Ethanac, while the southbound side is closed at Nuevo.  
 
CHP logs indicate the closure could last as long as 12 hours.
 
According to Caltrans, the crash happened at the I-215 and SR-74 Interchange Project site.  That's a $29 million undertaking which involves "...replacing the current two-lane bridge over the freeway with an eight-lane bridge," according to the Riverside County Transportation Department.
