'Suspicious' Device Reported at Murrieta Post Office

A sheriff's bomb squad was called in to investigate the device, described as a speaker attached to another device.

Authorities have been called to investigate a suspicious device at a at 39571 Los Alamos Road, in the Murrieta Gateway Center.

A woman called the Murrieta Police Department shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday to report the package. She'd received a postal notice at home to pick up the package from the post office.

"It is simply a suspicious device at this time," said Murrieta police Lt. Tony Conrad.

"She was not expecting the package," the lieutenant said.

The device was described to police as a speaker hooked up to another device.

Murrieta police cleared out and sectioned off the parking lot area of the post office while they awaited the Riverside County Sheriff's Department bomb squad.

The device was placed on a planter, far away enough from the post office that all businesses have remained open, Conrad said.

Murrieta Fire Department was also called to the scene.

At least two members of a sheriff's bomb squad had responded to the post office by 4 p.m.

By 4:30 p.m., authorities reopened the parking lot.

No official word was given on the outcome of the investigation.
