The suspected theif was shot when he tried to veer his automobile into a deputy.

Authorities today released the name of a suspected thief fatally shot while trying to flee from Riverside County sheriff's deputies.

Shane Kenneth Fryer, 26, and his 19-year-old passenger, Carleen Kandace Hornback, raised suspicions when they were spotted idling in a Nissan pickup truck in the 26000 block of North Bay Lane around 2 a.m. Monday, according to sheriff's Cpl. Courtney Donowho.

Deputies tried to make contact with the pair, but Fryer gunned the
pickup, accelerating toward one of the approaching deputies, said
Donowho.

"The driver almost struck the deputy, and the deputy fired his gun at
the driver," she said.

Fryer, a suspect in numerous thefts throughout the area, was hit at
least once, authorities said. He lost control of the truck, which smashed into a utility pole and then plowed into the front of a house, according to Donowho.

Fryer was pronounced dead at Menifee Valley Medical Center. Hornback, who was unhurt, was booked at Southwest Detention Center for possession of stolen property, sheriff's Sgt. Herman Lopez said.

About 400 people temporarily lost electrical service because of the
crash, Donowho said.
