Suspected DUI Driver Arrested When Gas Station Attendant Calls Police

"The clerk called us because they thought there may have been something medically wrong with her," Murrieta police Sgt. Jay Froboese said.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI Friday night when a Murrieta gas station attendant alerted police.

At around 10 p.m., Murrieta police responded to Circle K, 39850 Los Alamos Road, where the woman had reportedly been attempting to put gas in her car for 15 minutes, said Murrieta police Sgt. Jay Froboese.

"The clerk called us because they thought there may have been something medically wrong with her," Froboese said.

Instead, police allege she was "extremely intoxicated," based on sobriety tests they administered.

Three officers who responded to the call were assigned to conduct a DUI saturation patrol within the city Friday, according to Froboese.

Police did not provide the name of the woman arrested Friday night, but said she was booked at Southwest Detention Center near Murrieta.

Funding for the extra staffing was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. Murrieta police are able to conduct the saturation patrols 20 weekends of the year, he said, thanks to the funding. It is one of the requirements of the grant.

Additionally, Froboese said the department has a traffic officer whose dedicated responsibility Wednesday through Saturday nights is patrolling for drunk drivers. The position was recently brought back in an effort to reduce DUI-related accidents in the city, he said.
