UPDATED: Suspect Leads Murrieta Police on I-15 Freeway Chase

Murrieta police pursuing a shoplifting suspect on Interstate 15 north before electing to terminate the chase near Highway 74 in Lake Elsinore, a sergeant confirmed.

UPDATED at 5 p.m. Nov. 8:

A shoplifting suspect led Murrieta police on a 17-mile chase to Lake Elsinore before police elected to terminate the pursuit, Patch confirmed.

According to Murrieta police Sgt. Dave Baca, a shoplifting was reported by 25080 Hancock Ave. at 1:28 p.m.

"(The suspect) loaded up shopping cart of miscellaneous toiletries and walked out of the store and didn’t make any effort to pay for it," Baca told Patch.

The suspect, a Hispanic man between 35 and 45 years old, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, reportedly got into a tan Chevy Silverado pick-up truck with paper plates, Baca said.

Nearby patrol units began looking for the truck, and Baca said he saw one that fit the description parked on a neighborhood street not far from CVS.

"...Somebody ducked behind the driver seat, and that type of movement showed they did not want to be seen by me," Baca said.

As he pulled closer, Baca said the driver, a woman, drove onto Hancock Avenue.

"They drove away...She continued driving at slow rate of speed—about 30 miles per hour," Baca said.

The suspects turned right onto Murrieta Hot Springs Road, he confirmed, and then onto northbound Interstate 15.

The truck continued to travel at slower speeds, he said, when he noticed movement in the back seat of the pick-up truck.

"They switched drivers," Baca said, noting the truck then picked up speed along I-15 until the suspects exited onto eastbound Highway 74 in Lake Elsinore.

"The Murrieta Police Department elected to terminate the pursuit at 1:54 p.m.," Baca said. "The vehicle and the suspects are still outstanding and the loss is $150 worth of toiletries."

Baca said police are reviewing surveillance video from CVS. The truck is a newer model tan Chevy Silverado double cab with white paper plates, he said.

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation was asked to call the Murrieta Police Department at 951-696-3615.

"They know we are looking for them," Baca said.

UPDATE:

Murrieta police reportedly exited Interstate 15 onto eastbound Highway 74 as of 1:54 p.m.

The driver of the tan Chevy Silverado double-cab pick-up truck may be a Hispanic male in his mid-30s. A female passenger was also in the truck, police scanner activity indicated.

The truck reportedly had paper plates.

A Riverside County Sheriff's helicopter was called to assist in pursuing the driver.

ORIGINAL POST:

Murrieta police were in pursuit of a suspect on northbound Interstate 15.

The chase began at about 1:38 p.m. Thursday when a Murrieta officer attempted to pull the driver over on Hancock Avenue, according to police scanner activity.

The driver of a tan Chevy Silverado truck traveled south on Hancock, west on Murrieta Hot Springs and then north on Interstate 15.

As of 1:48 p.m., the driver was going about 80 mph and had just passed Diamond Drive in Lake Elsinore, radio activity indicated.

Murrieta police had requested assistance from California Highway Patrol and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

At least four Murrieta police units were reportedly assigned to the pursuit.

I saw the truck on my street and the driver was a lady.

There are so many paper plated vehicles in Murrieta, it's easy for the criminals to get away from a DUI, hit and run, etc.....Scrutinize all vehicle registration in your area.
It's a first indicator of a criminal, many times they can't get the registration....
Tim Moyer November 8, 2012 at 08:50 pm
Let me know what they find.
She pulled up slowly across the street from me as i pulled out and it looked like she was talking into a voice recorder or cell phone. She then turned around and pulled over. I continued on, stopped for an errand, and as I was stopped to turn right onto MHSR, I see the same lady go by with to police cars following her on to the north bound 15.

I'm pretty sure, according to what I heard on the scanner, that the woman and man may have switched seats during the pursuit. Still waiting to confirm the story with police, however.

Doing a great job and it would be helpful to get the address the desperado drove to..?
Maybe ICE needs to check out any other criminal aliens living there.... If we follow our wise neighbor to the south? We will imprison all criminal aliens for years at labor camps BEFORE deportation..... Tent prisons in the desert. It works for Arizona..It will work in our desert, too
Jorge Gutierrez November 9, 2012 at 01:46 am
What does being an illegal alien have anything to do with this story? Some people are so ignorant it's hilarious really

Anita you should explain what beans mean to you! At no time does the article indicate the suspects are undocumented. We also don't know where they come from!

I'm thinking that a Hispanic man driving a PU with no plates, who so brazenly just drives to his residence, has no fear of long-term prison. wonder why???
For instance, if he was not a US national, he knows he would only be deported; no problemo....come back manana.. What Mexican cops would do is to consider this looter a mad dog and shoot him as they would any crazed desperado refusing to stop.

Our family has received 2 red light tickets and I would still rather have them. We live very nearRead More Nutmeg & Clinton Keith. The intersection there is very wide and it is not uncommon for some idiot turning left on to Clinton Keith to jump out in front of the on coming traffic. One family member was involved in an accident there due to that very bone head maneuver! Now with the red light camera gone we have to worry about the traffic blowing the light on Clinton Keith. Not that it didn't happen before, but now it is an ongoing problem. Just the other day a as I was about to enter the intersection some stupid guy making a left turn jumped out in front of me and another nitwit blew the red light. I was almost broadsided and hit head-on! Maybe the red light cameras don't deter I don't know, but it sure made me pay a little more attention after having to pay the $396 fine! I hated paying the fine, but I did the crime! So I can't complain......grow up people!
