Shooting Event Goes Awry, One Shot in the Chest

About 200 people were gathered on Bureau of Land Management land in Perris.

A target shooter fired off a round that richocheted and struck someone in the chest today during an event in Perris, a sheriff's deputy said.

Sheriff's deputies received a 911 call at 1:26 p.m. about the accidental shooting that took place at Christmas Tree Lane and Santa Rosa Mine Road.

The injured person was taken to a hospital for treatment in unknown condition, Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Mike Vasquez said.

The victim was driven to an area near Washington Street in order to meet up with sheriff's deputies, Vasquez said.

The shooting happened on Bureau of Land Management property, on which the shooter and the victim were among an estimated 200 people participating at a shooting range event, Vasquez said.

It was not immediately known from what the gunshot rebounded, the deputy said.
