Punctured Gas Line Prompts Closure of Newport Road

A four-inch gas line was damaged around 2:45 p.m. Friday in the area of Newport and Antelope roads in Menifee, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

A natural gas line was ruptured by a construction crew working in Menifee Friday afternoon, prompting authorities to shut down a roadway while repairs were made.

Sheriff's deputies closed access to Newport, between Antelope and Via Corazon Drive, until the Gas Co. finished patching the leak.

Residents within a quarter-mile area were being advised to stay indoors, though there was no immediate threat to their safety, according to the fire department.
