Program Elicits Dangers of Drunk Driving for Students

The "Every 15 Minutes" program—which includes a staged accident and funeral—is taking place this week at Murrieta Mesa High School.

Students at are taking part this week in a program designed to elicit the dangers of drunk driving.

Starting today, the in conjunction with the and several other city and Riverside County Emergency Response agencies brought the "Every 15 Minutes" program to the campus.

"This program is sponsored by local businesses in the community, and is a re-enactment of a fatal DUI traffic collision on the grounds of the high school," said Murrieta police Lt. Tony Conrad.

Juniors and seniors witnessed the mock accident this morning.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel responded with lights and sirens, and a Mercy Air Life Flight helicopter landed on school grounds to airlift one of the “critically injured” students to a trauma center.

Members of the student body take part in the accident, which includes realistic admittance to the hospital, and for some, being arrested. Students who "died" are separated from their families.

The program concludes Friday with a mock “funeral” for the victims of the accident during an assembly.

"Every 15 Minutes" is brought to each of the city's comprehensive high schools on a rotating yearly basis. It typically falls close to prom and graduation season.
