Prescription Drug Take-Back Set for Saturday in Murrieta

Residents may bring their unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs into the Murrieta Police Department between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Murrieta residents are encouraged to turn in their unwanted prescription drugs Saturday.

The April 28 drug take-back day is the fourth nationwide initiative of its type. The Murrieta Police Department is partnering with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration to coordinate the event.

"The initiative provides those who have accumulated unwanted and unused prescription drugs an opportunity to safely dispose of them and remove them from their homes," said Murrieta police Lt. Tony Conrad, in a news release.

"During the last three take-back events, the DEA, with local and state law enforcement took back (more than) 500 tons of prescription drugs nationwide," the lieutenant said.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, residents may bring their prescription drugs to the front lobby at 24701 Jefferson Ave.

A Murrieta police officer will be on hand to accept the surrendered pharmaceuticals, which will be destroyed in accordance with federal and state laws, Conrad said.

"The Murrieta Police Department believes the DEA program has been successful at removing dangerous prescription drugs from our homes and this community.  We encourage the residents of Murrieta to come into the Police Department this Saturday and participate."

Any questions about the event can be directed to Lt. Tony Conrad at 951-461-6309.
